CLOTHES FOR A CAUSE – HAITI 2017
Your child’s gently used clothes can be a precious gift to the children of Hurricane-torn Haiti.
When Hurricane Matthew struck as a Category 4 in October 2016, Haiti bore the brunt of the destruction as the powerful storm pounded the western peninsula. The region of Jeremie was particularly hard-hit, with estimates of over 80% destruction and hundreds of casualties. Months later, the community is still in ruins.
When WCC founder, Lisa Orloff, went to Haiti in the aftermath of both the 2010 earthquake and 2016’s Hurricane Matthew, she was overwhelmed with the survivors’ dire need of everything from clean water to shelter to clothing.
“There is so much poverty,” Lisa says. “But the kids are happy playing with a bottle cap, or whatever else they can find. The children in some areas only have one set of threadbare clothing that they salvaged after the storm last October. Some just have dirty rags or tops with nothing underneath. Almost none have anything to protect their feet.”
As part of an ongoing effort to help the people of Haiti, World Cares Center is launching a clothing drive for the children of the region of Jeremie, where the need for aid is tremendous. We are asking friends, students, organizations and community groups to collect gently worn spring and summer clothing ages 3 months- 14 years. In particular, we are seeking the following items:
- Short sleeved t-shirts
- Lightweight pants
- Tank tops
- Casual skirts
- Lightweight pajamas
- Clean flipflops, sandals or croc-type shoes in good condition
We are also looking for individuals and groups to wash, fold and package donated outfits and hygiene products by age and gender.
Our team at World Cares Center will then work with the Haitian community leaders and local responders that we have already trained, to distribute these packets in the communities we have served.
Please consider helping us help the children of Haiti! You can organize a clothing drive in your community, volunteer to wash one or 20 loads of laundry or make a donation. Please contact us to find out how you can get involved!
No time to spare, but still want to help? Please consider making a monetary donation!
CARE PACKAGES WILL BE SHIPPED TO HAITI ON APRIL 25th
